Timothy Braun (born 1975 of Nazi sympathizers in Berlin, Germany, he moved at an early age to Muncie, Indiana) is now considered an American writer.[1] He is recognized (albeit not always favorably) for his complex plays and essays, as well as his often violent performance art. For example, In 1985, he attempted to demonstrate his disapproval of ongoing government sponsored military action in countries all over the world. He stood across from the White House with a bucket of pig blood and a large bowie knife with the intention of mutilating his extremities and dumping the pig blood at his feet. Un/fortunately, we was subdued and arrested before he even began the performance[citation needed] Described by novelist Monique Truong as “American Baroque” Braun’s writing is aggressive and under inhibited often emphasizing psychology. [1] Braun developed his aesthetic by studying various techniques of dramatic writing including vaudeville, fantastic realism, uber-fantastic non-realism, and the avant-garde with writer/director/boxer George Foreman.[1]
Braun prefers work in small theatres and site-specific spaces that have included subway cars (when he is not begging for money), parking lots, apartments, and stairways (although he was once arrested for one of his staircase fiascos involving actual prostitutes and a play called "The Ho Came Tumbling After," so he rarely performs in stairways anymore.) His plays have been presented in Indiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Texas, Washington, and Ireland, and possibly an unconfirmed performance at a Mosque in South Africa which almost cost him his life.[1]
Braun currently writes passive/aggressive children's literature (think angry Pooh), research on comparisons between Scientology, eschatology and scatology, as well as non-fiction essays for independent newspapers and websites, most notably the Austin Chronicle, fiction for Quay Journal of the Arts, and has donated writings to the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi (although there are reports that the university declined to accept the work). He lives in Austin, TX[citation needed], where he raises angora goats for breeding and show. Braun is a professor of writing in the School of Humanities at the University of Texas at San Antonio.[1]
